After India’s Independence, the area comprising todays’ Padoor remained part of the Malabar District within the State of Madras. Within this disctrict, we were part of the Ponnani Taluk. In Ponnani Taluk, Padoor and Thoyakkavu together formed the smaller revenue unit named Kundazhiyoor Panchayath (Kundazhiyoor Amsam).
(Note: A map of the Padoor Desam within the Ponnani Taluk during 19th or early 20th Century (undated though) is included in the Basel Mission Archieves published during 2012. Name of the desam was shown therein as "PATUR".)
The States Reorganization Act of 1956 that came into being as on 1st November 1956 was responsible for formation of the India's provinces based on linguistic and semantic barriers. In line with this Act, the new State of Kerala was formally inaugurated on November 1, 1956.
The Malabar district (part of the then State of Madras) and the Kasargod taluk of south Canara district were added to the existing Travancore-Kochi State after separating the Tamil-speaking southern region of the old Travancore from Travancore-Kochi (this region was added to the new Madras State).
On 1 January 1957, the districts’ other lower revenue units within Kerala were re-organised. Within the Malabar District, A portion of Ponnani taluk was transferred to form the new Chavakkad taluk and was transferred to the Thrissur District. Tirur taluk was newly formed, taking portions of Eranad and Ponnani taluks. The residuary portion constitutes the present-day Ponnani taluk. Of these, Ponnani Taluk become under the Palakkad District and Eranad and Tirur became part of the Kozhikode District.
During the first Kerala State Legislative elections in 1960, Padoor happened to be in the Guruvayoor Constituency. The first election saw Mr. Kooliyattu Koru Master, Independent backed by the Communist Party, romping home to victory in Guruvayoor. His main opponent was Mr. M V Aboobacker of the Congress.
During the 1960 assembly elections, Late Mr. B V Seethi Thangal, from Padoor, elected to the 2nd Kerala Assembly from Andathodu Constituency (1960-64). Mr. Thangal had courted arrest during the anti-communist “Liberation Struggle” which culminated in the dissolution of the first assembly and the 1960 re-elections.
Prior to this, as far as my knowledge goes, the notable accession of a Padoori in wider politics was that of Late Mr. Kariat Kunhi Bappu who sat as a member in the Malabar District Board.
Mr. Thangal continued to be getting elected as a member to the 3rd (1967 - 70), 5th (1977-79) and 6th (1980 – 82) Kerala Assemblies from the Guruvayoor Constituency. Mr. Varkey Vadakkan, brother of Rev. Father Vadakkan, from our neighbouring Thoyakkavu, was the Gurvayoor MLA during the tenure of 4th Kerala Assembly (1970 – 1977).
During the 1965 assembly election, the panchayath was added to the Nattika Constituency. However, the adjoining Mullassery Panchayath still remained part of Guruvayoor. However, this time around Mr. B V Seethi Thangal was not fielded by Muslim League; instead Mr. Nattika Abdul Majeed was their candidate in Guruvayoor. None of the political parties or alliance secured a majority in the house; and an assembly was never constituted after 1965 Kerala elections.
During 1980 delimitation, the Venkitangu Panchayath was included in the Manalur Assembly Constituency in which it still remains. During this time, the adjoining Mullasseri Panchayath was made part of the same constituency once again. Unfortunately though there was no representation by a resident of Padoor or elsewhere in Venkitangu Panchayath in the Kerala Assembly after 1982.
